We chatted to the wonderful Sarah Bambey about her love of food and upbeat attitude towards eating!
Tell us about your name ‘Pretend Health Freak’ – what does it mean?
Basically a pretend health freak is someone who will try their best to be healthy but still enjoy a treat from time to time. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and if there’s one thing we have in common, it’s our love for food!

You now have over 100,000 followers on Instagram – how did your blogging journey begin?
Well I love to be creative and I love eating. But it’s when I started to take an interest in my health that I channeled all of these traits and called it a blog! I just randomly created an Instagram account (@pretendhealthfreak) one day and started sharing my healthy recipes, and the rest is history!
What is your favourite recipe of all time!?
The healthy Coconutty Caramel Slice from my free ebook would have to be my fave! It’s so creamy and sweet and just SO yummy.

What is the most popular recipe on your website / Instagram page?
At the moment it’s my Healthy Cookie Dough Slice! Because who doesn’t love cookie dough?

What are your must have pantry staples for healthy eating?
Chia seeds, tahini, pure maple syrup, rice malt syrup, almonds, and everything coconut… coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut flour, coconut sugar etc. I just LOVE coconut.
How did you increase your following and get your name out there?
I’ve been extremely passionate from the very beginning and I think that’s key because when you’re passionate you’re constantly trying to find new ways of improving. There’s a huge community online of health bloggers so I’ve done many collaborations to share audiences – that’s probably the most effective way I’ve found to reach new people.
Do you have any tips or secrets for people wanting to start their own blog?
I would say not to compare yourself to other bloggers. It’s hard not to but it’s just not productive (I’ve been there). All that matters is that you enjoy what you’re doing. The large audience is just a bonus. I had a vision when I started my Instagram to have my own website, ebook, youtube etc. but it took a couple of years to achieve all of those things, so you just have to be patient and enjoy the growth.
What’s next for Pretend Health Freak?
I wish I had an amazing answer to this question because everybody wants to know, including me! But to be honest, I really have no idea. I think the important thing is that I want to know so I’m sure I’ll see the big picture in the right time ha! In the mean time I’m just going to keep enjoying the current stage that I’m at.
